I've been doing this for almost 30 years! Yes, at first you should not have to ask. However, one of these years, and it WILL happen, she will return the Christmas gift you bought her. THEN it is time to start asking her what she wants, and yes, she will say nothing.
So after enduring a few years of my best guess, she now tells me what she wants. And this year, it is a photo printer.
Oh, and contrary to the long held belief, jewelry is not the sure-thing home run gift.
