I HAVE A 2011 V6 Automatic, when do i need to start worrying bout fluids?
How often should i check/change the oil?
Should i just leave everything up to the dealership? Is the dealership going to check the fluids for me wheni bring it in for maintenace? Should I be using some kind of fuel booster or additech or something? I WANT WHATS BEST FOR MY CAR!!!!!!!!! |

If you want the best for your car......no one will care as much about your car as you.
If you know how to turn a wrench, you can change the oil on your car yourself. The V6 is extremely easy, takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish. My car has not been at the dealer since delivery day 15 months ago. I check my oil every couple of weeks, and change it every 5,000 miles, no matter what the DIC says. The V6 comes with dino from the factory. Maybe overkill, (I'm old school) but I changed my oil at 1,400 the first time with dino, and changed again at 3,000 with Mobil1. I have 16,000 miles on it now, and have changed the oil every 5,000 with Mobil1 and NAPA GOLD oil filter #7090. If you go by the DIC, you can get 8,000-11,000 between oil changes, depending on how you drive. (there are many different opinions on this) As far as the other fluids, I check them occaisionally, but have not changed out any. I run 87 octane (there are many different opinions on this) and use no fuel booster, my car runs fine.

I also have a 2011 V6 Automatic and should hit 500 miles sometime in Nov. My plan is not to have my Camaro serviced at the dealer except for warranty issues. Reason: For years I have been using an excellent garage that I trust 100% to service my autos.
Question (s): The Camaro most likely will be low annual mileage (under 3500 per year) and as with past autos I change oil & fluids twice yearly as most mileage is city stop and go. So, at 500 miles I understand it is best to change oil and filter. To be safe should I also change auto transmission fluid? Any other fluids I should change at 500 miles before winter starts here in Canada? I plan on driving my 2011 for at least 10 years and because I am a low mileage driver, in ten years my 2011 should only have about 45,000 miles in 2021. It is all about maintenance. I also have a 1998 Buick Riviera, 67,000 miles, still looks and drives like new because it has always been well maintained. Hope to have the same experience with my Camaro. |

usmc8411 thank you for your 'experienced' feedback suggesting I read the service manual. Your detailed experience regarding this thread is appreciated. Your effort to answer threads with your ‘superior knowledge’ and ‘personal experience’ is a benefit to all who read Camaro5.

I just changed the oil in my wife's 1LT with Mobil1 @ 1500 miles. Many new cars come with Mobil1 from day one, so I don't think it is necessary to wait longer.

imo, changing engine oil is simple enough. but what about coolant fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and any other fluid you have to flush out and refill.
What about lubricants, on axles, and other moving things? Someone should make a sticky on maintanence things =) When to do it, with what products, etc.

I know changing the oil and filter isent that hard, I still took mine to a quick lube.
I may get a good REAL class IV PAO synthetic like castrol edge or amsoil and change it myself next time. Its hard to find real class IV oil in the states let alone a place that has it and will service the car for you. |

I guess your monthly report wouldn't help as I believe it's based on miles driven.
Hard to determine with mine too, with current driving pattern I'll be at about 30k miles in 10 years... and it's my commuter car! Work is pretty close by... That said I'll still have the oil changed every few months with only the best. Plus still put in other additives whenever I finally get past the break-in period which currently looks like another 6 months... |

Here is the deal. First, as mentioned check your owners manual. You will see that many fluids are quite long intervals. Your oil will be what your oil life monitor us or no less than annually.
That being said there is nothing that prevents you from going above and beyond that with the only restriction being your budget. Remember GM offers a 5 year 100,000 mile PT warranty so you can have a lot of confidence in the owners manual recommendation.

Check oil every other week and change it every 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes 1st DO NOT leave everything up to the stealership, errhm, i mean stealership, dammit, said it again If u decide getting oil changed at dealership, ask for a FREE 31 point inspection to include Fluids (Robbins Chevy offers it for free) You dont need to use additives. Good Luck... |
