So you're basing your opinion on an intake manifold uses successfully for over 10 years on one of the best performance cars in the world that took many years and dollars of R&D to develop on the quality of some plastic gears in a cheap chainsaw....

My brain hurts......

NO, I'm just a little plastic shy() right now and just found out about plastic manifolds and blew my top. Also the newest engine I have touch and looked at up close and personal is a 92.

The name of the forum is: Camaro V8 LS3 / L99 Engine and Powertrain Discussions Discuss V8 engine and powertrain for the new Camaro.

I figured this was a great place to get cold hard facts on the LS3/L99 in the Camaro SS. Information specific to the Camaro's LS3 doesn't say anything about what the intakes are made of. GM could have decide not to use plastic manifolds on the Camaro. As one poster put it, Plastic doesn't always mean cheap.

post what you want. bet you learned something about the use of other material beside metals. some people think it's not real unless they have seen it. you got good information on why plastic was used on the intake. that was your goal to begin with. the only sensless question is the question you did not ask (in these cases post).

Geez, it's NOT PLASTIC it's a COMPOSITE. If your a Chevy fan seems you should read up on the tech in these motors. Of course folks still think the Corvette is fibreglass. So go figure.

The steel disks actually melt and forge together with the calipers. That is why they changed them to a ceramic composite material which dissipates heat way faster.
Since you're such a helpful guy thought I'd help you out, fixed it for you.

You missed the "melting and forging together" part that I nailed him on before... lol!

This has been good information. The engine block is still metal though right?

i used to have a picture where a guy blew his aluminum intake into about 4 pieces from nitrous
was it a sheet metal aluminum intake? or a cast/forged aluminum intake?

Luckily...an intake manifold doesn't spin real fast or tear down trees -- it just routes air. You could probably make it out of glass if the ride wasn't so jarring.
actually, there's been composite (better term instead of plastic lol) intake manifolds on LS1s since 96/97.... (remember, they came on the vettes first)

and actually, ive seen single runner carbon fiber intake manifolds .

check out this W-9 motor....lol

and how much power is getting applied to those gears? not a whole lot compared to using the same gear in a car.

Also, bear in mind; not all plastics are created equal. There are some that can repel bullets, and there are some that would break if you farted on it. The plastics they put on engines is high-quality stuff.
actually they do suffer under some stresses, vacuum pressure from the motor does put minute stress on it, but its been developed to withstand that. and if you've ever run nitrous or f/i on it, that adds stress, but still, they are some damn good composites.

no, actually they changed it to a carbon fiber design to reduce on weight....

yes its still metal.
