I'm sure ordering a new instrument cluster won't be TOO difficult.

I know what you mean, I had a Jaguar little while ago, and that car had a common problem for the gas gage to go wrong, it would show empty. And I was going nuts thinking I am going to run out of gas. Even though I knew i still have gas, but it was still driving me crazy. And I didnt have time to have the car dropped off in the shop, although it was under full warranty, but because it was perfectly driveable I was putting the visit off. So I ended up doing a simple thing, from previous fill ups I knew I was getting 300 miles run on a full tank with the type of susual driving I was doing. So i filled up the car full tank and was reseting the trip computer, once i was hitting 250 mile mark, i would then go and fill the car up again. And it worked for 2 months like that :-) So if you know you get 250 miles on full tank, reset the odometer and when you hit like 190-200 go fill it up again, temporary solution till you get a new cluster.

Is this a constant problem or intermitent? Sounds like you could have a wire grounding out. I'd check that before spending $$ on a new cluster.

Spend a lil money to save headaches...
get it diagnosed first by a mechanic or dealership. Not sure if AutoZone still has the OBD to read codes, or if it would pick up that code, but trust me, you'll save time and money in the long run, rather then Guessing...

Hope you had a fun Birthday weekend by the way... (the one on the left is you, with 7up, 'm on the right with Mr. Miller)

HA...Our little shop delivery car is a 1996 GEO Prizm with 150k miles on it. Gas gauge will be on 1/4 then E immediately, we can never tell when we are going to run out of gas!

You haven't modified the stereo lately have you? Could have a loose connection causing the cluster to ground out or a wire rubbing aginst a sharp metal part under the dash (think battery cable issue). Its going to be time consuming to find the problem. Good luck!
