What are "bolt ons" to you?

Was reading a thread earlier about bolt ons so I thought I would post this.

So for most, bolt ons are the basics.

CAI
HEADERS
EXHAUST
CONVERTER
TB

Is an aftermarket intake (example: fast intake) considered a bolt on to you?

Not many people mention intakes when being asked about a bolt ons.

Is a bolt on anything you can bolt onto the block? Then heads would be considered a bolt on as well?

Lets hear opinions.

Anything that does not require you to modify the cars so that you can not get it back to 100% stock is a bolt on.
You can still get picky about it too though, my Supercharger required a couple holes in the rad shroud, it it still a bolt on? I say yes.

I remember reading where someone on the forum said, when you have fluids involved, as in draining/refilling. It's not a bolt on. Bolt ons do not require any fluid draining. Made sense to me.

I think the term "bolt ons" can be interpreted many ways!
I've wondered the same thing as far as a Fast 102 intake, or aftermarket heads? I don't know exactly where the line is drawn Bc at some point almost everything is a bolt on!

I think the question becomes, are you asking what is considered a "bolt on ONLY" to be on the fast list w bolt ons?
In that case a Supercharger would not be a bolt on. Nor would adding a cam.
However IMO, heads and intake would qualify as a bolt on. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Anything short of breaking the seal on the engine has always been a bolt on to me.

Pulling heads is def not a bolt on in my book. I would consider things like FAST intake or Rocker Upgrades to be light mods and actually a cam might be considered a light mod but heads and more are getting into heavy mods.

Now a Centrifigal S/C? That is a gray area but I would consider it a bolt on but maybe a little bit more. Something like a Maggie... getting really dark gray.

It seems to me with all the stuff that GM can monitor now it should be a question of Warrantied or not. Once the warranty is gone I say go crazy.

From reading around here the real race is to see who voids their warranty the quickest. lol

In the formative years of LS1Tech, we viewed bolt-ons as any mod that you could do without cracking open the engine. So a cam or ported heads would not be bolt-ons. If you read GMHTP or Camaro Now they generally hold the same perspective.

Engine bolt-ons:

Exhaust
Air induction
Pulleys
Intake manifold
Water pumps

So how does removing heads differ from removing the intake? Both essentially crack open the engine.

But if we go by the fluids comment it would be different.

Then we get into thermostats! If we go by the fluid comment thermostat would get you out of the Bolt on only category.

I would think anything needing the factory tune to be altered would be the criteria for a WARRANTY VOIDING bolt on.
That's what we really mean....correct???

My question isn't towards warranty. More towards the racing scene.

I've bought a pair in the past... they cost me about $7500 almost 20 years ago. Today they can go for $10-$15 grand for a good set. Now I know you can get a crappy set for about $5K.

Incidentally buying a set of bolt ons for the little woman is the surest way to get rid of her... lol So if you ever are needing to get out of a relationship just buy a set (cheap ones) and guaranteed inside of a year she will leave you for another dude. It'll help in the divorce proceedings too. LoL
