As a EE, we studied the CAN system a lot in school. The hacker doesn't need access to your OBD II port. In theory, they can tap in to your car through the brake light. But it really depends on how the car is configured. The networks are often sub-divided to reduce traffic on a given network. So the brake light might not have access to critical systems. But it might let them unlock your door.
