Curious, those that still use RADAR detectors. Do you find that the increasing number of cars that use RADAR based adaptive cruise controls and blind spot monitoring set off a lot of false alarms? Or do they not trigger it?
EDIT: Looked it up and yes, depending on the RADAR detector and the other cars RADAR Freq. It seems that Audi's are some of the worst offenders followed by Mercedes. Last edited by MLL67RSSS; 08-14-2012 at 10:51 AM. |

My father has the exact same unit as I do, but he has not had this happen to him, so it must just be mine that is off by a bit somehow. I have wondered if there is anyway to fix it. Anyway, I have also noticed that the type of Radar used varies a lot by location. In my area, in years past, X band used to trip going past every grocery store and convenience mart, and was almost always a false alarm. It was K and Ka bands being the deadly tones to cause concern. In the past two years, however, the K band seems to be the source of all false alerts and the trigger for cheaper detectors in other cars to set off. Ka band is still almost always a LEO, and X band seems to always be cause for concern too, only tripping when used by older equipment outfitted units in rural areas. Detectors are not foolproof, but they do help enhance your situational awareness. With that awareness has to also be a mindset of change in the frequency and the cause of the different tones, and the adaptability to realize when and what tends to trip them. You then have to change your reactions to the tones accordingly, as I mentioned above. Such as the X band being a serious tone again rather than a false alert. As for the laser part, it does just let you know that you've been caught. Funny bit is, whenever I drive past the exit that leads to the airport on the way to work, even it can be falsely triggered. There is something in that tower by the highway that trips it, like clockwork, every time you go under it. The first ten or twelve times I drove past there, it freaked me out. I was looking every day for where the source was sitting/hiding at. After a month or two, I talked to some friends/family about it, and found that everyone false trips there. So be aware that even laser can be tripped as a false alarm. It is rare, but there are places like that too. |

EXACTLY!Super speeder tickets are stupid expensive.I've been driving with the 'flow' of traffic in and around Atlanta and been 15+ mph over the limit. My 9500xi will beep and I'll check my speed and back down if necessary. This just happened last week and a LEO zoomed past me and stopped a guy I was following doing about 62 in a 45...never regretted buying my 9500xi!!

I've had a Passport 8500 for several years now and it has done pretty good. I just bought a Corvette and I decided it was time for a new detector and I bought a Excort 9500 (with the blendmount that mounts to the mirror) and I am very happy. I like the 9500 much better.

X and K band are used for automatic sliding doors on businesses, most detectors are smart enough to not throw a warning and can tell the difference, but on my 8500 you could tell it to ignore those. Ka is most common for radar, better signal for the officer shooting it. From what I've seen, most officers will use radar in less populated areas or while in their cars moving (as far as I know, they still have to be stationary to use laser/lidar), and on busy roads or freeways they use laser because they can pinpoint specific cars where radar would spread too fast and bounce off of everyone next to you.

I Have A Valentine V1 For Over A Year it Has Saved Me A Bunch! It Gives Me Plenty of Advanced Warning On Open Road. I Have Powered From The Rear view Mirror, It Tells You If It's Front,Rear Or Side. Pretty Useful!

I was in CA a few weeks ago..got busted for doing 100mph on a 65mph highway. CHP was driving the opposite direction and crossed the median to chase after me. I pulled over right away as soon as I saw him turn to cross over and turned his lights on. Asked me if I knew how fast I was going..I said, no clue. We walked to his car, he showed me 102. He said, "I'd write you at 100mph, at 101>, you'd be in a shit hole here in CA." I wondered if a detector woulda saved me.

Road construction, school zones, accidents, flooded roads (happens here often) heavy traffic. All these alerts keep me on my toes and more engaged while driving. It helps makes me more proactive while driving defensively. EDIT: No way of proving it but I bet those of us that ride motorcycles are way more aware on the road while behind the wheel. |

I know....I was actually just jokin'...... I sit in the same place most of the time....it really doesn't matter....if people use Trapster and avoid seeing me...its all good..... at least they are going slower in my area. you have to be going 20+ over normally (sometimes 15+ if traffic is heavy) to get me to come after you anyway....and if you are on the phone too.... and I always pass out the "Camaro Love" as some on here have already found out
