From the picture it looks like there are a couple of precautions that could have been taken so this specific problem didn't happen, that weren't. MACE said it would never happen again, hopefully it has been taken care of... Wonder how RX deals with this problem? I've never even hear of/seen pictures of an RX ported v6 manifold.

Well I checked my IM. Drained the catch can and pulled the plenum cover while I was at it.
When I first got my IM I'm pretty sure the color of the fill was more like Magnum's when I first got it, but now it is a brown color which I'm guessing is due to the oil. Look closely at the sides and you can see where it has pulled away very slightly from the walls. I tried pushing and picking at it but it is very solid...that said I'm 100% sure if I picked at it enough I could get some of the edges to snap off which is a bit concerning to me (don't want it going down through the engine). It will be a pain b/c of the downtime, but like I said before, I may wait until over the winter when the car isn't driven much and send her back to have it re-done. Side note...catch can had a little oil but not much. Its obvious some oil is still coming through b/c of what I found inside the intake, but it isn't a lot either. Its not coming from the clean side b/c I'm running a Vararam intake and so the clean side tube is just hooked to a breather.

I've had my MACE ported intake on since last summer and with just about 6k when I first saw this thread.
I went out immediately and gave a check and the plug looked good with no flaking around the seams and seemed to be rock solid. Luckily at the time of inspection, I saw no oil residue around the plug. Seems my CC is doing it's job and like KMP, my Vararam has no inlet from the clean side so no oil getting in that way. Just a guess, but is oil seeping into the seems causing adhesive failure? I'll be checking again for sure. Just a thought but if this continues to concern me, I just may pry that bugger out of there for piece of mind. Is it really needed anyway?

I think it is needed so the air flows smoothly or else you would have turbulence right in that area (atleast I would think could be very wrong.)

I don't know. I guess with the depression there it could cause some air turbulence, but I'm no expert so I can't say.

Actually my best times were with less performance modifications (sans Ported IM, Isolator, Plenum spacer and Hypertech tune in place of the IPF). Now I love the MACE ported IM. Very nicely done with great support from Jay. My car is great on the street with no hesitation and from 0-80 mph I couldn't be more pleased. In my case though, I would perhaps pull the plug with no worries about the turbulence it may create.

I think I'll be pulling my TB off soon to check as well. I've got at least 10K miles on my ported IM. I'm fairly confident that there won't be any oil residue since I saw nothing prior to the catch can install at around 5K miles. I also have a Vararam intake, so there won't be any clean-side oil infiltration. I have an Rx ported IM. I'll look for flaking/lifting of the filler... I'll post up what I find.

I am pretty sure I got the first RX ported intake manifold. I have put over 40K with zero problems but will check the manifold tomorrow out of curiosity.
Edit. Maybe it is possible that if the manifolds are being recycled the oil wasn't completely cleaned leading to a poor adhesion. Maybe this was mentioned earlier and I missed as I have not been very active lately.

I think 67 hit the nail on the head. The oil definitely has the chemical composition to deteriorate adhesives.
I also had oil in my manifold which confused me because when I put it on at the same time I installed an elite can and the manifold was bone dry. I suspect the can does not catch everything. I never drilled that PCV orifice or whatever that was so maybe that messes up the can? Either way people check this because even though mine stayed in one piece little bits of the filler or glue could have went right into the engine. I'm no expert but that probably could blow an engine fairly easily. I also really doubt taking it out would do much to hurt performance. Maybe if you were running nitrous or FI but otherwise the difference is probably negligible. |

The clogged orifice would keep oil from even getting to the can, much less to the manifold. A clogged orifice results in oil seeping out elsewhere.
