If they break in the motor at the factory, they should put fresh in after that. Anyone know for sure? If its the very first oil in the engine then it should definetly be changed after few hundred miles. All new motors should have it changed after break in.

I prescribed to the "drive it like you stole it" breakin method during the first 700 or so miles. After the car was warmed up, would start from a dead stop, step on it pretty good, get up to about 6000 RPM, shift into 2nd - never went insanely fast (75'ish) and let the engine slow down on it's own. Works great on freeway off ramps, off and on again, etc. Didn't downshift during that period of time. Could feel the engine coming around, the more I drove it.

After the oil change, there was some debris in the filter not overwhelming, but nothing I wanted in there for another couple thousand miles.

To each their own. That's my .02 cents. Lori

Yeah, I mean you just spent $30k on a new car. Dont be worried about swapping out the oil after afew hundred miles to get rid of any foreign junk that got in during assembly. Talking <$40 if you do it yourself.

its a car.. im not saying go until the the car says 0% oil life.. but it truly is a waste of money to change it so soon.. let it truly break in..or ull be changing it again and again..

That's a good idea doing the first one yourself.

I followed GMs recommended plan. Changed the oil at 2k when I brought it in for the 2k mile inspection.

i've been driving it pretty spiritedly so i'm gonna take it in tomorrow at noon after i take it on the highway and get on it a little more. the service is gonna be free so i'm not worried about the money. one of my reverse lights keeps going out so i'm gonna have them take a look at that also.

thanks for the replies guys and girls.

Break in in hard, and yes, change the oil frequently! I did mine at 500, 1500,4000,then depending how i drive it. Your DIC will keep track of oil life precent. Also change the diff oil about 2000 miles, and the transmission before 5k IMO of course these are widely disputed, but hey, its just your car.You will get more metal in these at first due to everything "seating in" and its normal. But you also want to get it out. First mod to get, again IMO is an oil catch can. Do it while its new. And have fun!!!

I plan on doing it at 750, 1250 and 1750 and after that I'll do the normal 3K.

Don't do it at 500 miles. Do it when GM says to do it. Why? Well because when you first buy a car, they don't have have the normal oil you would put in every time you change it. They have special additives that bond to the motor as you are breaking it in. It is important to not do it too soon, 500 miles is too soon. Way too soon.
