Transmission is trashed
Well...it finally happened. I killed my trasmission...somehow . Long story short, I was doing my regular old driving and it got stuck in 4th. I had no 2nd, 3rd, or 4th once I finally managed to get it out of the stuck 4th. Well, I drove it home w/ only 4th, 5th, and 6th. I've driven a Z28 02 model for about 4 miles through stop and go's, up hills, and all while stuck in 4th. So, I was confident it would make it. It did.
I get it home (this was last week), call the tow company the next morning who picks it up and drops it off at Ancira (where I have all my Camaro work done). They check it out, call my extended warranty company (thank God I got one!) , get the go ahead to break it down, takes forever to have someone look for it..and here goes. The tranny is apart and the shop says there's no way to tell what broke first....the covered part or the non covered part. You could see the $3,000 dillemma that faced me. Luckily, an independant contractor took a look at the tranny for the warranty company. He couldn't determine what broke. Found out today that it is all going to be covered under warranty!!! Oh, thank the Lord! |

Lucky one you are!
Glad to hear it's covered. Must have been fun taking off in 4th. |

It's rough on the clutch, but yeah...it'll go in 4th w/ some feathering. The tough part was in my Z28 when I had to take off in 4th on a hill....ugh. That was NOT cool. That clutch stank!

Well...3 weeks later and I get my car back from the car doctor. She's all fixed up and back on the roads. Tons of new internals...$3,337 and some change. Ouch...thank God for that aftermarket warranty!!!

Not to threadjack at all, but I had some tranny trouble about two months ago in my 2 yr old MAZDA6. I heard a terrible whipping noise, but the car still drove and shifted fine. I took it to the dealership and they told me I put a clutch fork through the side of my transmission from "hot rodding". I laughed a bit... hot rodding in a 4-banger MAZDA6. Anyhow, they shipped a new tranny from somewhere and gave me a brand new clutch as well. All under warranty. I was quite impressed by the service I got, as well as the rx8 I had as a loaner (which I indeed did "hot rod" )

I got my car when I was 16. It was the best option for me for insurance and cost reasons. I would've replaced it a couple months ago, but heard the Camaro was a go, so I'm hanging on to it for a bit longer. It actually is a nice car for someone my age. All problems have been minor because I'm picky. 'Cept the trans. But I did learn to drive a stick in it...

After losing my first tranny in my 02 Z28 at 6K miles, I got yelled at by the shop forman at my service dealer and was told if I did it again, they wouldn't pay for it to be replaced. Seriously, I wasn't hard on it. In fact, for the next 54K miles after having the tranny replaced, I raced it quite often. It never broke again.

It's these kind of stories that make me wonder if Automatics wouldn't be better overall...I'm pretty set in wanting the paddle shift, but still, makes me wonder

The RX8 they gave me was a 6spd paddle shift. It was fun and all, but the lag was TERRIBLE. I've never heard about the Corvette's shifters, but hopefully Chevy can cut down on response time...

Oh I don't even care about that...It's the longevity of the tranny, that I'm interested in...
