Plasti-dip - How do I keep messing this up?
Trying to plasti-dip the bow ties on my SS. I've watched 50 videos on this, the process is easy enough but I keep on screwing up when I'm removing the tape from the chrome section of the bow tie. The coating is getting between the gold emblem and the chrome so when I go to remove the tape, I'm also peeling a piece of the coating off the gold.
How do I avoid this? I have been rolling the tape over the chrome lip of the bow tie, could this perhaps be the issue? Maybe I need to go over that area with an exact-o knife to prevent it from peeling when I remove the tape? I feel stupid having to ask this question but I can't be the only one who has had this issue before! Last edited by masoch; 07-22-2018 at 10:04 PM. |

stop taping the chrome just tape a square around the emblem and then tape up some newspaper surrounding the area to avoid overspray. 1st coat light, next coat heaver due 4 or 5 coats over the entire area not taped off this will make it easier to remove. Then just make a small nick on the chrome area and pull, it should pull around the center no problem.

Peel the tape while the plasti dip is still wet.

Exactly what both says. But the most important, peel while wet.

or you can get a heat gun and seperate the center bowtie from the chrome piece. Then scuff the center piece a little . Spray some primer on it and let is dry then spray what ever color you want for the center of the bowtie and then let it dry. Then clear coat and once its all dry get some 3m tape and tape it back to the chrome piece. Then you wont have to keep messing with the plastic dip and it will last longer.

Plasti dip done correctly is perfectly fine. Peel tape while wet, before spraying keep the cans of dip in hot water to warm them up.

I agree with yarbie though... I hate plasti dip... Used it once, liked it for a day and regretted it for 3 years almost...
Never gonna use that product again.

I like peel coat spray paints for bowties. Use many light coats. Peel tape while wet. Use the glossifier to finish.
I like to be able to change up the color of my bowties to match the different color stripes I apply. Here's a fun one I did for my previous nightfall grey metallic RS: Black peel coat, krylon glitter blast, glossifier

Did the same thing on my old 2016 Colorado. It worked perfect and lasted through two winters, probably 60 car washes, summer bugs, etc with ZERO problems. It's awesome and if you like to change it up it's a simple process to paint, peel, and repeat as many times as you like. I love plastidip for emblems and can't wait to get after my 2019 Terrain this spring.

In all honesty, I've learned the hard way that Plasti-Dip is just the cheap ass way of going about things - the amount of time and effort you have to spend in getting it right will out-cost the fact of just buying them painted from a professional company like RiverCityCreations or something - it's only $70 for each emblem and it comes out perfectly glossy. This goes with rims and everything else, just get them painted - don't bother plasti-dipping that shit, even if you get it on properly, good luck removing it without tearing your hair apart. Also, the matte look of plasti-dip just doesn't look pleasing either, makes it incredibly easy to spot and very cheap look to it as well.

I wrapped mine with leftover vinyl. Just need the vinyl, razor blade, and blow dryer.
