I bought a SS LS3 and I am not brand loyal or biased. I did not get to try out a 11 5.0 as none were available. I due have to give ford credit as they have aggressively made the mustang the new muscle car that is not a one trick pony. The car is fast, light and can put a bmw M3 in it`s place. That in itself is truely impressive.

Now with the upcoming release of the boss 302 there will be an even better stang, under rated 440hp with all the trick parts. That car is gonna hang with the GT500.

GM needs a lighter weight NA Z28 to compete with the boss.

Did I say all that? Well, it's probably true anyway.

2012 Camaro SS vs. 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca?

Mustang Boss 302

It actually looks pretty cool!

And with 440 horses?

This thing looks like it's ready for the track!

Not to talk it up, but that thing is going to destroy both the 2012 mustang gt and camaro ss. I wouldn't be surprised if it paced the first gen gt500. Honestly I like it more than the gt500. Give me one with a little, quick spooling turbo and I'd track it all day long and drive it home.

!

I think they underrated it as well. It just doesn't add up power wise.

What doesnt add up? Since when has cams added very much power to an OHC motor? especially one that is all ready spinning to 7k in stock form? they lost 10 torque in the boss as is by going with larger cams. The car has to be daily drivable.
They are also still using less than perfect factory exhaust systems which will hold cams back. You need a true full set of long tubes to get the most out of cams.

Is the motor going to be SAE certified?

Why does everyone think their car of choice etc. is special and under rated? SAE certification puts an end to this. If the motor is SAE certified it is not under rated. If it isnt...I agree...it could be under rated.

All in all...the car looks awesome and should perform awesome...I wish I had more money.

Well for one, the changes include quite a bit more than just a set of cams. Cams, new intake manifold, valves, valve springs, exhast (the side-exit has no mufflers), new rods, pistons and obviously a different tune. Camming a DOHC engine can be very productive, especially when you have a high flowing head to make use of spinning it out more. You may not see huge gains in most, small displacement, ohc engines, but in an application like the 5.0, gain potential is very real especially with how well the stock heads flow. SAE power certification is not required for any vehicle, nor is it an end-all to how much power an engine is making. There are still ways to manipulate the hp rating, just like there were with the older sae rating systems. The car may not be underrated, but it's very possible and to me personally, it seems likely. In fact, I just looked on the Ford website and they say the 440hp is based on "preliminary data," so it is probably not an sae certified power rating.

It'll outperform the Camaro, i'm sure. I just don't love the look of Mustangs, never have been a fan of it. So Camaro I stay and shall be...

I like the specs but the styling and graphics are a little over the top. But you get what you pay for. The car will run the numbers.

You can't forget the heads are ported also.

I SERIOUSLY doubt the car is only making 440hp. Maybe closer to that at the wheels.

If its sae certified then its makeing 440 hp period. But that is one awesome Mustang. 2012 Model year is the 45th aniversary of the camaro, I'm sure chevy has something in the works for it.

I've heard about that, I have been going to open track days for the past 7 years off and on. If the Boss mustang power peaks at 7000rpm, what is the point of reving it to 8300rpm since power beigns to drop off at 7k. I have to see the power band, but it might be smarter to shift at 7.5k for fastest lap times.
