Because all the orbiters are national treasures. People touching them would eventually break and wear them down.

The cckpit isn't that hard to find.

I think I saw something on Science Channel about that thing. $10 million each.

Yep. The show was about a hypothetical mission to Mars. Maybe they're assuming SLS will do the job.
