Engine reliability 2010 V6 2lt RS camaro
Good day everyone, I am new here and am a current owner of a 2010 Camaro with around 75K Miles .
Now I have done my share of research and everyone says the engine on this model has the tendency to have a timing chain issues. How often does that happen, I am light on the pedal and I pretty much wait for the engine to reach about 110~120 F and start moving (Since I saw some comments saying moving without warming up might be a cause. IDK but wont hurt to warm up the engine before going.) Well that was my first question. How About catch cans ? Is it necessary or nah. Thanks a lot for reading through and I hope I learn a ton from everyone here. |

The early LLT's did have timing chain issues. At the mileage you're at now, I'd get it done before you have major problems later on. Also, a catch can is a good idea on a direct injected engine. However, you probably already have some build up after 75k miles. So, I'd do a major induction cleaning before you get one.

ill second gringo. while i dont have the v6 camaro, i do have a 3.6l DI CTS (which is the same motor) and at ~114k miles i had to get the timing chain replaced, check engine light, horriable gas milage, and ran like crap.
i was told by the mechanic that replaced the chains, that as long as you change the oil on a reguler basis (not when the change oil light comes on) you should get ~150k miles out of the new one.

I'd use a good oil like Pennzoil Platinum proper grade 5-30 and change it every 4-5 K. I'd worry about the chains when it tosses codes telling you its time. If its running good and no codes why would you change them. I would on the other hand change the spark plugs if they have never been changed. Direct injection is harder on the plugs because of carbon deposits, I changed mine @55k and there was a noticeable difference in drivability and fuel mileage.

Given the age, model and history, I think I’d PM the chain before it starts ‘throwing codes’ because it might throw a chain first. But then again, I put a band-aid on a heater hose on my ‘01 Yukon this morning. We all do what we think we can get away with.

Be glad you bought a v6 and don't have to deal with lifter failure. I wouldn't touch a v8 until GM gets their pencils out and redesign the mess they have created. The newest version is even worse and more complicated. Replacing the chain on your engine is not a tough job at all. Repairing failed lifters usually involves replacing the engine. These v8 guys on here shit their pants every time they drive their cars waiting to hear the noise of a failed lifter. Change your oil every 4-5k with Pennzoil platinum 5-30 and you'll be good for a long time. Another thing that goes without saying DON"T BEAT ON YOUR CAR WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD!

GM built over 500,000 GEN5 Camaros, you can figure on over 30% had V8s. I've seen, read, or encountered very few V8 failures. Stating the L99 or LS3 is trash just shows your lack of knowledge on the subject.

BS! I've owned more LS series engine than ANY of you. I know their troubles inside out. Just wait till you guys get up in mileage............one of the reasons I wouldn't touch a newer v8 unless its converted<now you're gonna ask WHATS THAT.

Go over on Cam6, right now there is a post engine lifter failure 1500 miles.........engine replaced by dealer. The new ones are even worse because of updates they did. Oh no this never happens, you v8 guys over here are really immature I've never seen like it.
Don't tell me you don't cringe every time a lifter starts tapping. I've been down that road many times. |
