The fleet average would have to be 30mpg too low to add $1600.

I'm not worried about global warming or climate change or whatever you want to call it, but I'd be pretty unhappy if oil really did run out. I'd rather break even on a more expensive car that gets better MPG than have to crash a bicycle into a crowd at a festival when I'm 60 years old. When I'm too old to drive and I crash into a crowd, I want people to get hurt damnit!

Plus, even though it adds to the cost of the car in the beginning, the R&D gets paid back and then that technology doesn't cost more anymore but everyone benefits.

CAFE got started before GW was the next big thing in science.

I hope they slightly relax some regulations on Diesels to make it easier to certify them. Diesels are IMHO better technology then hybrids. Diesels are well understood and diesel should be cheaper then gas if America geared up for diesel production. I've driven in the new Jetta TDI and I'd take that over a Prius any day of the week. My Dad's 3500 Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins that has been chipped with a 5inch exhaust puts out 390 hp and 788lbs of torque in the economy-towing mode while still averaging 17-19mpg (4mode Edge Chip).

So anyway- y'all knew this was coming (if you didn't, you've been smokin' the chronic). So make the best of it.

Sorry to be blunt, but that's like having a discussion about spelling without mentioning any letters.

This is all about politics. No way around it.

Please find a way we can talk about current events without getting punished.

NO.

The rule is what it is. All we are asking is that you discuss CAFE without dropping political party comments. Feel free to say the President wants to do something. Don't say Those damn republicans are so ____ . Or the Dems are only trying to ___.

Thats' not too much to ask.

And Dammit CA. You've been around long enough, you should know better than to even ask this. We've never yielded on this. The only other option is to go to a political site..

I haven't looked myself, but other people report that diesel is currently cheaper than 87. They suggest that the reason is that the refineries cranked up diesel production preparing for V8 diesel equipped half ton pickups but then the diesel pickups were canceled. I don't know if any of that is true, just repeated what was in a thread about diesel prices elsewhere.

CAFE is a political issue, but it can be discussed on its technical merits/concerns and such, without having to bring in partisan politics or any of the other more nasty forms of political discussion.

Good: "CAFE requirements will be too high, the Camaro might end up with a turbo 4!" "No, CAFE doesn't work that way, the rating scale is different and it's average for the whole fleet."

Bad: "President So-and-so and his Whichever Party always do Whatever to CAFE and it's stupid because it results in SomethingElse happening to the environment/sales/me."

Oh, and another opportunity to plug my friend's site...if you want to discuss CAFE in a partisan political way, or if you want to discuss anything else at all, try http://AllOffTopic.com where everything is off-topic. Can't post pictures of mutilated dead people, but other than that anything goes.

You can always sent it in a PM first. I'd be glad to let you know if it's appropriate.

It's about 5 cents more than premium here. It's unfortunate that those programs got canceled. I understand a lot of the reason they were canceled is because of California (which has been a major bar to the import of European diesels as well). It was just too much headwind to get an engine certified as 'clean diesel'. BMW for instance only brought one of their engines over due to cost, even though all the BMW engines use the same diesel technology.

As all the manufacturers start talking about world-tech (see Ford Fiesta and the next Focus for examples of what this looks like), you can expect to stop seeing engines discussed in terms of V8 or I6 or whatever- it will be all about the liters.

Death of the Camaro

I just watched the Presidents news conference on new cafe and emissions standards...I believe this will spell the death of the Camaro as we know it. Since things will start changing in 2012 with an ultimate cafe standard of 35 1/2 mpg in 2016, I figure you have until late 2011 to buy the Camaro you want. After that the Government will tell you what Camaro you can drive if it is still around, but if it is, we will have threads about applying stripes to balsa wood or how to camouflage the windmill on your roof. This is no longer the country I grew up in when the Government tells me what is best for me. I didn't realize I was incompetent to make my own decisions! By the way, the only person missing at this news conference was the American Consumer. What are your thoughts?

Agree more than you can ever imagine. Socialism sucks.

Note: This thread should probably be moved to the off-topic area.

Whose fault can this be, but the voters, and those that didn't bother.

No whining except in front of the mirror.
