I quit jan 1st, 4th effort and I think this one will stick. 51 years old. Just don't need
the headache anymore. Smoked a half pack a day till the weekends (and a few brews).
Am I hurting right now, shit yes! Good things don't come easy.
Best of luck to you all.

About ten years ago, I went from cigarettes to those little filtered cigars.
Only problem is, I was inhaling the cigars which is probably worse than inhaling the cigarettes.
I was just kidding myself with the cigars.
I quit because I have 2 small grandchildren and another coming next month.
They are the joy of my life and I want to be around for them as long as I can.
I quit cold turkey......It's been almost 3 weeks and I'm over the worst of it (I think)
I haven't even had one puff since Dec. 18th.
I really don't see myself ever smoking again.

Four years ago I got Chantix (http://www.chantix.com/) and have been smoke free ever since.
With Chantix the thought of having a smoke was there all the time the first couple of months, but the overwhelming urge to go and buy a pack or light one up was not there.

I did have a picture of a dead person with his chest cut open from lung cancer as a wallpaper and lock screen on my iPhone tho lol
Same here! 12 years of smoking, but quit cold turkey after my son was born, Dec 15th, 2011. Day three was the hardest for me, but since I scaled back my smoking the months prior, I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms that I'm aware of. The benefits are immediately noticeable. No more coughing, smelling like smoke, shortness of breath has diminished. All good things!

The longest break before this was one month and that was with nicotine supplements, but all it took was me saying I could have one at breaktime and continue to be smoke-free. Very hard to do. One leads to two etc. My advice, no matter what, don't have that "check" cigarette to see how you're doing.

Great thread BTW.

i smoked from 67-87'. i quit cold turkey.
april 2010 i got a really bad cough and thought it was the flu...til i started
coughing up blood.
turns out it was stage 3 lung cancer. so i drove 110 miles/day down to moffitt cancer center in tpa for 3 months of chemo and radiation treatments every day.
now i get a petscan down there every 3 months to check if it's come back.
nov was my 4th petscan and they found something.
yesterday i went down there for a broncoscopy to take a biopsy of it.
now i'm just sitting here waiting to find out what it is and if i'm going through all that crap again.

SO, I HOPE ANYONE TRYING TO QUIT DOES!!!

:( My grandmother was diagnosed IIIb and died less than a year later. It sucked. Another reason I want to quit.

Thinking of you, man.

I quit five years ago!

NEVER thought I would quit smoking, let alone stay quit!
I will always be amazed that I accomplished such a task!

Hold onto those precious quits with everything you’ve got!
You won’t be sorry. Some days you will think that you can’t do this.
When you have a good day, store that in your brain. When a bad day
comes along and you want to smoke so flipping bad, go get that
good day memory.

Time is truly your ally in all this mess!
Time heals almost everything.
Give time, time.

You can do this!
It just so happens that this is the fight for your life – YOUR LIFE!!!

If it wasn't for www.quitnet.com I know I would have never stayed quit!
Check it out.

I'll leave ya with this....

Nicotine is a powerful drug
From gummer on 5/11/2006 10:42:27 AM
=============================================

And it affects your BRAIN.

Let me say that again... it affects your BRAIN.

It affects how you feel... how you perceive things... how you THINK.

Nicotine affects the very organ you need to use in order TO QUIT.

That is why it can be so hard to quit.

Because nicotine causes you to perceive things inaccurately and therefore act irrationally.

It causes you to want to smoke against your better judgment.

It tries to circumvent your efforts not to smoke.

It causes you to find justifications to smoke and actually believe them.

BUT when you quit... as the need for nicotine diminishes, and releases your brain from its grip, you will start to perceive things differently... you will gain greater clarity about smoking... you will start to see it for what it really is... and understand what it is really doing... and how unnecessary it actually is to living comfortably and happily.

But in order to gain that clarity you have to NOT smoke even if your brain is telling you that is all you want. You may have to gnash your teeth a bit, you may have to blindly trust the advice of others who have quit. But you absolutely cannot smoke... not a puff.... because nicotine is a very powerful drug that affects your brain. The very same brain you need to quit!!!

AHA!

My addiction seems so petty now. That is the most compelling post yet. Thanks for putting it out there and please stay in touch. I hope I don't get thrown out for saying God bless.

Sorta. I enjoy just about all music. I even enjoy a little hip-hop in small doses now and then.

(OMG, I can't believe I said that.)

Be well.

Positive thoughts & prayers are with you.

I'm not sure what all I want to say here. I smoked on & off for a few years at a time. Not sure if I ever was truly addicted. I called myself a "stress smoker". Now I know that once I had the nicotine totally out of my system, I coped better with stress & no longer "needed" that cigarette. When I found out I was pregnant with my now 18 year old son, I never picked up another one.

Last year on my birthday, Aug 9th, I sat in a doctor's office with my mother & my 2 sisters and listened to a doctor tell my mother she had just months to live with treatment. She had lung cancer that had already spread to several parts of her body. She never smoked a day in her life. She told the doctor that and he said "But your husband did". My dad had stopped smoking when I was just a small child. I was so grateful he never had to hear that. This is the one blessing he got from Altzheimer's. We now think Radon gas in the home we all grew up in may have had more to do with it. Who knows? We lost my mother shortly before Thanksgiving last year.

Please all of you................quit, put them down...........never look back. Just go and look at the people that you care about. You don't want them to watch you die, you don't want to watch them die. Oh, and if you live in an area of the country that has Radon..............get your house tested. It is easy.

Good luck everyone. That is all. Ruby out.

My quitting was more like a miracle. I quit in April of 2010 after smoking on and off for 20 years. I haven't smoked since. Towards the end of my smoking career I was feeling nautious and sick to my stomach everytime I smoked so that made it easy for me. No cravings, however I do eat more and have stacked on a few extra lbs.
