Dealer has block off plates, I believe from GTO. $8 or so from a GM dealer.

I know this is an old thread but it’s a good write up with parts links so I wanted to subscribe to it for future use anyways. Does the plug I install into the block to plug off the coolant line need any sort of locktite? Anti seize?

Ty I thought about doing that. I wasn’t sure that is recommended or proper procedure for installing one. This car is definately giving me a lot of firsts in my mechanical accomplishments.

Just to help someone else who happens to read this and wants to do this that orders that block plug from summit racing. You will need a 17mm hex bit for the new block plug. Also a 34mm shocket to get the original hose plug out of the block. That info would have been useful instead of trial and error on the sockets etc needed to find that out. I ended up having to borrow the 34mm and buy the hex bit as I didn’t have those that big.

Pipe dope is all thats needed. Did mine over the winter during my build. Been driving all summer and oil temps have stayed the same as when it was in there. Mine leaked too, so wasnt going back on

I think the consensus is that the oil temp is a calculated value, not a measured value. It wouldn't change anyway, unless you have an aftermarket oil temp gauge.

Noob Question
Why not use both a factory oil cooler and a aftermarket oil cooler like Mishimoto ?
I think that is the route I am going to go. The only issue I am having is I would need to get a smaller stack because of the stage 2 intercooler.

I don't know exactly where the oil cooler is in the oiling system, but putting coolers in series will increase the pressure loss across them. The stock system also tends to leak.

I read the stock system prone to leaking. And how well does a oil cooler work that is supposedly cooled by hot coolant/antifreeze? You can eliminate factory cooler plug the coolant Lines like described here and then get a block of plates designed to feed oil to an aftermarket oil cooler, like this One.

https://www.holley.com/products/plum...arts/LS0013ERL

this will do 2 things in my mind.

1. Keep oil cooler and coolant systems separate so if any leaking is going on no cross contamination

2 provide a better functioning oil cooler that does a better job.

The fact here is the factory system is a leaky whore and doesnt do much to cool oil. Its more in place to get oil temps up quicker when first starting. You absolutely do NOT need an oil cooler unless you are into some heavy road racing

Plus an added benefit is a little more weight reduction when deleting

Oil temps are higher than coolant temp so yes it will cool it off some. More like knock the edge off the temp. Think of it like getting two pieces of steel up cherry red hot. Throw one in boiling water and throw the other out on the ground and you have to bare handed pick one up 60 seconds later. Which one are you picking up? The one in boiling water I bet.
