Once you resolve your battery issues, you should use a battery tender on the car for long periods where the car sits. It will greatly extend the life of your battery.

Get a new battery, and get a modern battery tender for future storage, not your dad's manual charger.
And even so, get a new battery after 6 or so years. If your car sits outside in extreme hot or cold, more often than that. |
