My new Z(PICS)
Hey guys. My name is Kevin and I just purchased a 97 Z as my dd. I'm liking it so far but wanted to know a couple things. One is when I go WOT with it it feels like the car is misfiring or bogging down or something, something in the engine. And 2 is the cats have been cut out of this one and it throws a code for the 2nd o2 sensor and something with the EGR. What is the cheapest fix for this and what might the misfiring be? Anyway on to the pics.....
And here is some of my baby(Still a chevy with a ls2 and bolt-ons) These are all taken at my favorite place to take pics, so enjoy and tell me what you think and what the problems are with the camaro. BTW the camaro has an intake and the cutouts with no cats, just a cherry bomb. |

Nice Z and TBSS.. Are those the Summit wheels on the Z?
Anyways, I think the problem could be a number of things, from the sensors to faulty optispark. You can reprogram your PCM by sending your unit to Brian at PCMforless or Madz28, which would delete your 02 sensors all together, or buy o2 simulators to delete your rear sensors. A common trait of bad 02 sensors include bad fuel mileage, so whats ur MPG? -Miguel |

Well, the wheels are cragar sst, I believe and the fuel mileage is bad too. I'll have to take care of the exhaust and I'm still looking to see what the misfiring issue really is. Thanks man.

Chief, do you have to worry about emissions testing where you are at?
you will more than likely need to replace the rear 02 sensors. they are probably getting fouled due to the cats being removed. which is in turn telling your pcm to send more gas to the motor, which decreases your mpg, and also causes your good o2s go foul out as well as your spark plugs. also, do you have an A4 or M6? how many miles are on the car? you said when you go wot it starts boggin down, what rpm does it start to bog at?

as usual, my money is on the Opti, but there are other sensors that it could be... but about 85% of the time, the probem that you mentioned turns out to be Opti.
nice TBSS... you'd think that working for the railroad, I'd have thought to use the railyard as a backdrop... but I guess I'm just not that quick... lol... good choice in backgrounds

Nice Z28 and welcome to the site. Sorry I can't help you with your situation as I've never had that happen. But, these other guys should be able to help you out. Looks like we got a couple guys answering on here that know their stuff around the shop. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Honestly I bet all my money that its the Opti spark distributor. Reason is.. The LT1 motor has the dam Opti right under the water pump.. If your water pump goes bad or leaks any coolant on your distributor.. your screwed. I already had to replace both on mine. The LT1 is a great motor.. Thats just about the only flaw of the motor.. The location of the Opti :(. Even if your water pump didn't go out ever, the Opti's are really sensitive and your going to have to replace it no matter what eventually. Another possibility is that the wiring harness on the distributor can be frail and old. Sending so much spark through it will cause it to miss and sometimes back fire if you floor the gas. Sooo look into those.
Btw you guys with LS1's are lucky you all don't have to worry about this - as far as the water pump\opti issue |
