New GM system should curb police chase deaths and injuries

"What this technology does is stop the vehicle," Huber says. "The fleeing driver cannot continue. It automatically disengages the drivetrain, which means the accelerator stops working. That ends the high-speed pursuit. It disconnects the horsepower. Just like that."
I'm not to fond of the Big Brother aspect of it, but I like this! +1 for GM!

Want the betting that some bright spark will find a way of getting around this in about 5 minutes and post it on the internet!!

It something i could see being very annoying if it goes wrong.

Very good tool to save lives and catch the bad guys. All too often, police chases are called off because the safety of the others on the road are more important. In effect, way too many criminals get away. I'd love to have our dispatcher contact a GM security agent 24hours a day and bam!...turn off that car.

No doubts there. Just another skill that car-jackers would learn. Though - since it's computerized, they'd have to do some serious tampering to stop it. Like disabling OnStar tampering...not an easy task I'd imagine.

Absolutely - I'd love to start hearing news reports about how such-and-such a criminal got their vehicle disabled thanks to GM's OnStar. Allowing the capture, and potentially saving the lives of innocent drivers.

btw...I wonder if they could keep the criminal locked inside the car, too.

Excellent idea IMO. I'm a fan of the 'black boxes' as well.

Now, hopefully Onstar puts some controls on this feature. I remember Onstar employees opening each others trunks from their offices in Troy, Michigan back in the day - that was funny

I like it. And it can't be activated unless the owner of the vehicle wants it on . . . err off. I wonder, what percent of chases are of stolen vehicles and what percent are of the owner themself? But anyway, if it will save 1 life then I'd say its worth it.

While it is true that, at some point, everyone can get a little caught up in their jobs, this system is designed not to allow abuse. An officer cannot simply stop your car because he wants to write you a speeding ticket. An officer can't even stop your car if you've just committed a bank robbery and are in the process of fleeing from half the state's troopers. The article states that the only way for an officer to halt acceleration is if the owner of the car calls in to report their car stolen. Even then, the officer has to contact On-Star and verify they are pursuing the correct vehicle (On-Star sends a signal to the vehicle causing its lights to blink). Now, the vehicle can be halted, by On-Star not the officer.

Using your taser example, this would require the victim to call some central civilian agency which would call the suspect so their phone will ring. At this point the officer can verify that he is pursuing the correct suspect. Now he must contact this agency and have them turn on his taser before he can take down the perp. Now, let's not forget, all of this only works if the cell phone in question is a subscriber to this feature.

I think this would prevent a lot more abuse than it would allow.

Like the Stun gun? How the hell is that related to this technology?

I'm all for it... I had wondered if there was some way that OnStar could be used in case of a car chase or something. Another + for GM! Ford and Dodge are falling behind quickly!

I would have responded too, but that would have been a waste of time and energy to have done so.
