Very cool to see how far safety has come in 50 years time. Good job to the IIHS and GM

Cool to see, but a horrible waste of a classic.

Indeed. But that Malibu sure held up well!

I would have guessed that the old car would hold up better, but the occupants would be bounced around like rag dolls. I was surprised that the car itself did so poorly.

Wow. I don't think it's much of a tragedy though since for all we know they could have spent a butt load just bondoing and re-paneling the Bel-air to GM spec just to crash it.

Yes and that should give an accurate representation of metal strength during a car crash... Bondo.

And there was a pretty significant cloud of rust that came from the car. The metal in that car probably deteriorated a lot. Obviously the Malibu is going to perform better regardless, but I think the Bel Air's age had a lot to do with it.

I know you meant '59. It would be a shame if they wasted a '57... But that test really is something...

Vehicle Safety: 1959 Chevy vs 2009 Chevy
Pulled from another forum I frequent, pretty amazing....
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was 50 years old in 2009. As part of their commemoration of the event, they staged an offset crash test between a 1959 Chevy Bel Air and a 2009 Chevy Malibu. If you are a classic car fan, you might not want to watch this video of the crash demonstration. They have many different camera angles covering the crash, including cameras in the vehicles.. http://www.iihs.org/video.aspx/info/50thcrash Both cars were going 40 MPH. I was surprised that the cars weighed nearly the same: The Bel Air weighed 3620 lbs and the Malibu weighed 3514 lbs. The Bel Air was 211 inches long and the Malibu was 192 inches--almost 20 inches shorter. |
