Will AFM drive you to learn stick?
With all the talk about AFM and the detuned L99, I was curious, what ranks higher on your list of priorities:
Performance and ease of tuning/modifying the standard LS3, but you have to drive (or learn to drive) stick or Ease of driving an automatic with the complications of AFM and possible limited performance modifications. I know I'm all about the stick, and wouldn't have it any other way. I know there are some who won't drive stick, but in years past have always had just as easy a time modifying their cars since everything was pretty much equal, whether you opted for the stick or auto. Is the possibility of complications to modifications enough to push you to learn how to drive a manual? |

If this was going to be my daily driver I would be all ove AFM! I took a short trip in moms Cadillac, drove 55-58mph up and 65-70 mph back. Going up I got 32 MPG!!! Return trip I still got 26, that's in about the largest car you can still buy nowadays.

Manual all the way like you, but I would love if there was a dual clutch option down the line that would give you the best of both worlds, likely not to be cheap, but would have some advantages for my needs.....

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the Camaro with V8 auto and AFM is gonna get over 30mpg hiway at reasonable speed and watching your acceleration. That's incredible for a 400hp+ car.
I re-read your orig. post. Many older folks know how to drive a manual, I drive a stick all day, and will buy a man. Camaro, but ONLY because it won't be my daily driver.

I was originaly planning on getting a SS/RS man, but I've been hearing that the automatic is just as quick or quicker so no I'm not sure. There's nothing like slammin through the gears with a man, but with the auto I can get the remote start that will cool down the black leather I want.

I've been dead-set on a SS Convertible 6-speed since the concept vert was released...but with the onset of AFM (awesome!) and even the badass 6-banger we're gonna get, I may just have to go with a "lesser" model afterall that I can still enjoy but the wife can drive and I can afford easier.
You can't go wrong either way. Stop looking at AFM like it's some evil plot against you. Carb guys said that about EFI for YEARS, and look where we are today...most tuners will take a nice TBI set-up over a carb for a small block due tot he ease of tuning. |

I made the mistake of getting an auto in my Z28 due to the car being a fantastic deal at the time, and regretted it ever since.
M6 all the way from now on. The GF can't drive manual at the moment, but i plan on teaching her on a little 91 beater MR2, not that i'm going to let her drive my 5th gen anyway... |

I have nothing against active fuel management. I am planing on making my camaro a daily driver and don't intend on doing much in the way of moding. So I am leaning towards the automatic. it is faster and should provide better fuel economy.

Even with less power the auto-equipped SS is supposedly quicker than the manual SS. GM's automatics are generally very good.
I'm not saying there's no point to driving manual. It certainly has its advantages. But I think the intro to this poll is definitely biased and misleading. The performance of the auto SS is not exactly limited, and there shouldn't be much difficulty modifying the L99, given that any modification to a modern engine needs to consider the computer anyway.

I learned how to drive on a stick and have owned 9 stick shift cars. I'd just prefer an auto this time around and I like the idea of AFM because I drive a lot of highway miles.
