Should I use different oil if I have a tune ?

Hey guys, I’m a long time reader but I finally decided to post a question. I e looked all over the the forum but I couldn’t find anything, so I apologize in advance if this thread has already been discussed.

I have a 2010 Camaro SS with a stage 2 cam, tuned by Cunningham Motorsports. I’ve always used Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w30. I noticed my oil temps always climb after 2 or 3 pulls.

I can’t afford an oil cooler but I was wondering if I could use 5w40 to help with the oil temps.

Thanks

No, i would stay with the factory recommendation. No need to change. What temps are you seeing

If I were going to change I would go to the driven LS oil from Joe Gibbs. Other than that Mobil 1 full synthetic is fine as wine.

You would usually not need anything other than Mobil1 unless you track it, but 240 after a few pulls would bother me too. When you say pulls, you mean quarter mile runs right?

Aren't the oil temps calculated anyway and may differ quite a bit from actual?

Switch to 5W40 in the Spring/Summer.

@Camaro Craka when I say pulls I mean like on the interstate running 75 mph and then I decide to do a few pulls. When I say a few I mean about 5 or 6. Down gearing through traffic.

I will look down at my oil temp and it will go from about 210ish to about 240 250 ish real quick. Then I have to chill out until my temps go back down. The needle on the oil temp gauage always goes over to the last white line before the red line for anyone that has a 2010 where the guages are located under the radio.

I’ve heard people say the guages weren’t accurate.

For the guy that said run thicker oil in the summer, I appreciate your response, but this happens in the cold or hot weather.

Should I bite the bullet and buy an oil cooler ? I don’t track it.

@gtstorey I’ve heard the same thing. Some say it’s inaccurate.

I want to add that I’ve never encountered a problem, it just makes me nervous.

If you live in Florida, you technically only have one season, summer.

The oil is designed to be good well over 240, but running 5w40 is not going to do any harm and it will give a little bit more viscosity when it's hot.

Some guys who track mix Rotella with the 5w30 for the extra additives. Others run 10w40 or even 20w50, but that for a track event where they spend a lot of time over 5k. I just ran 5w30 when I tracked mine and the idle oil pressure got down around 25psi, which is low on my car. Once it cooled down, it was all back the same as before.

I will try 5w40

I also considered 5w30 with a bottle of Lucas. But I don’t think a bottle of Lucas will cool the oil temps.

I also considered running 5w30 AMSOIL since it’s 100% synthetic and Mobile 1 is not, even tho its says FULL Synthetic.

I run Rotella T6 (5W40), higher ZDDP content, but I don't have Cats. I have
216,000+ miles on my LLT V6. Change the oil every 10,000 miles too, but I
keep after the oil level.
